Why AI referrals look like direct traffic
If you are judging AI assistants by your referrer report, you are almost certainly concluding they send no traffic while they quietly convert.
What is happening
When someone acts on an answer from an assistant, the visit frequently arrives with no referrer header. Sometimes the link is copied and pasted. Sometimes it opens through an in app browser that does not pass one. Sometimes the assistant summarises the page and the person navigates independently.
Whatever the mechanism, the result is a visit with no evidence of origin, which lands in direct.
Why it matters
Direct is where good news goes to die. It is treated as brand traffic, people who already knew you, or noise. So a channel that is genuinely producing customers reads as zero, and gets no attention or investment.
Four ways to see it anyway
Ask
The single most effective method, and the cheapest. Put one line in your order confirmation asking how they found you, and make it a reply rather than a form. The replies are specific, unprompted, and quotable in a way no dashboard is.
Look for citation data
Some webmaster tools now report when AI answers cited your pages. That is observed evidence that your content is being used as a source, independent of whether the click carried a referrer.
Watch entry pages
Assistant traffic often lands deep, on the specific page that answered the question, rather than on your homepage. A rise in direct traffic to an obscure internal page is a strong hint.
Record first touch
Capture origin on first visit rather than at purchase. It will not recover a missing referrer, but it stops a later direct return from erasing a known first source.
The wider lesson
Every measurement system has a shape, and that shape decides which truths it can express. Referrer based attribution cannot represent a channel that does not send referrers, so it reports absence. Absence of evidence gets treated as evidence of absence, and a working channel gets defunded on the strength of it.
When a number says nothing is happening, check whether the instrument is capable of detecting the thing.
